Strategy to eradicate narcotics usage among students soon
LAHORE: Federal Secretary Narcotics Control Zafar Abbas Lak has given a hint towards introduction of a network of anti-narcotics volunteers comprising groups of students in each educational institution in both public and private sector to create awareness against drug abuse. The volunteers will be issued special identity cards by Anti Narcotics Force and will be imparted 3-day training course at ANF academy, Islamabad.
He made these deliberations during an advocacy workshop on co-relations between substance abuse and domestic violence, here today.
The workshop had been organized under the auspices of United Nation Office of Project Services and federal government?s Gender Justice and Protection Project in which the participants were informed about the recommendations of the research study regarding the solution of the untoward situation being confronted by the victims of domestic violence particularly in pretext of substance abuse.
Director General Project Management Unit of the Ministry of Narcotics Control Brig. Muhammad Shahid and consultant of the survey research study Ali Ahmad Jan apprised the participants of the workshop regarding the results of the survey.
According to the survey, substance abuse amongst women in urban Pakistan exists amongst all segments of the society. Substance abuse is equal among uneducated and educated women but more prevalent among high society and lower economic classes.
The most common drug of choice among women was Charas followed by Heroin and Shisha. The findings do indicate that mostly domestic violence occurred due to mood swings of the drug addict regardless of gender of the abuser.
The study has revealed some recommendations to control this situation including more focus on demand reduction of drugs through sensitization, awareness campaigns by involving the leaders from the civic society. Another recommendations is about assuring proper secrecy and arrangement of proper psychotherapy in the rehabilitation centers for female addicts.
Federal Secretary Narcotics Control in his address as chief guest, reiterated his resolve to discourage the drug abuse and reduce the drug demand through awareness campaigns which also include appreciation certificates for those hostel owners who have succeeded to protect both the male and female inmates of their hostels from the menace of drug abuse.
Ulema will also be approached to help motivate the people at large as far as drug demand reduction is concerned. The field officials of Police would also be imparted professional training at ANF Academy Islamabad regarding drug abuse control, the federal secretary added.
Force Commander ANF Lahore Brig. Shahid AFzal, Project Director Drug Free City Lahore Project Muhammad Altaf Qamar and the office bearers of various NGOs associated with the project attended the workshop.
